Welcome to the Skills for Health section of the Assessment Tools website, which has been set up to provide details of the tools available for the Skills for Health sector.

Smart Move Skills Check (previously referred to as ‘screening’)

This Skills Check tool has been designed specifically for Health Care Assistants working in a variety of health care settings. It should only be used with users currently or very recently working as HCAs. It is designed to indicate whether the user may need further assessment by completing an initial assessment.

Initial Assessment (literacy and numeracy)

The Initial Assessment tools are designed to indicate the approximate skills level of a learner up to, and including, Level 2. They form part of the Skills for Life learning journey, following on from the skills check (previously referred to as the screening process) and leading on to diagnostic assessments.

The questions are based on criteria taken from the Adult Core Curricula and national standards. The questions begin at Entry 1 and increase in difficulty to Level 2. This tool has been designed specifically for Health Care Assistants working in a variety of healthcare settings. It should only be used with learners currently or very recently working as HCAs.

Paper-Based Tools (Revised Trial Versions)

The required audio for the assessments is included in the download. It is recommended for ease of use that the audio files are placed on to a cd.

Download the Tools

1. Right click on the file, and select ‘target save as’.
2. Browse through your computer from the dialogue box to get the destination the file will be saved to (we recommend saving to your computer desktop).
3. Click ‘save’.
4. Locate the download file on your desktop and double click on the zip file. In the now extracted folder you will find all the PDF’s / audio files for your chosen subject.

You will need at least adobe reader 5.0 to view these documents. Get the latest version of adobe reader.

Computer-Based Tools (Revised Trial Versions)

Download the Tools

1. Right click on the file, and select ‘target save as’.
2. Browse through your computer from the dialogue box to get the destination the file will be saved to (we recommend saving to your computer desktop).
3. Click ‘save’.
4. Locate the download file on your desktop and double click on the .exe file to launch the installation wizard that will guide you through the installation process.

You will need at least adobe reader 5.0 to view these documents. Get the latest version of adobe reader.
